  1. Baryte Barium sulphate, BaSO4, the most
  2. common mineral of barium. It is white or
  3. light-coloured, and has a comparatively high
  4. density (specific gravity 4.6); the latter
  5. property makes it useful in the production of
  6. high-density drilling muds. Baryte occurs
  7. mainly in ore veins, where it is often found
  8. with calcite and with lead and zinc minerals.
  9. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system
  10. and can form tabular crystals or radiating
  11. fibrous masses.
